The Hauntingby William S. Green
William Montell, author of Haunted Houses and Family Ghosts of Kentucky described Kentucky as a state with many ghost stories and wandering spirits. Some readers may find the book far-fetched; however, my wife and I know otherwise. In 1997, I accepted a job transfer to Lexington, Kentucky. We packed our lives into a U-Haul truck and moved to Kentucky. After arriving in Lexington, we settled into an older townhouse with a well-manicured lawn near my office. At first, life seemed normal while we adjusted to our new lives. Life wouldn't remain peaceful for long as an unknown stranger would soon enter our lives. One early morning, my wife, Jillian, heard someone running upstairs. This wasn't possible because no one was upstairs. She later called me to discuss the mysterious running sounds. I reassured my wife that the unexplained sounds were probably the wind. This became the first of several unusual incidents in our new home. Days later, my wife heard our youngest son speaking to someone. She entered his room to see who he was speaking to. She saw him talking into the air as if someone was there. He stopped speaking as soon as my wife entered the room. Our son was still a baby so he couldn't tell us anything. Weeks later, Jillian got a part-time job at a local restaurant. While working evenings, I cared for our sons. One night while watching television, I heard someone running upstairs. At first, I thought it was my imagination; but, my older son confirmed the same mysterious running sounds. I went upstairs to investigate-there was no one upstairs. I later shared the mysterious running sounds with my wife. There still wasn't a logical explanation. One night after getting home from my job, my wife seemed uneasy. She proceeded to tell me about a strange occurrence in the bathroom. She had placed a swan soap dish on the commode before taking a shower. After her shower, she noticed the soap dish sitting on the floor. It appeared as if someone had moved the soap dish onto the floor because it was too heavy to have fallen on its own. My wife stopped taking naps because she felt an eerie presence whenever she slept. However, when she awoke, no one was there. Fearful of the old townhouse, she wanted to move immediately. I refused to move and remained doubtful until I experienced my own meeting with the mysterious entity. One night after going to bed, I heard mysterious footsteps in the hallway. The footsteps came from my older son's bedroom. I called out to him but there was no response. I heard a sound similar to wind chimes and shuffling carpet sounds as the mysterious entity entered my bedroom. I could actually feel its presence at the end of my bed. I pinched myself to insure I wasn't dreaming. While in a state of shock, I stared at my alarm clock and watched the minutes tick away until daylight. I didn't tell my wife about the incident for several days because I didn't want her to think I had lost my sanity. After nearly nine months of unexplainable events, I quit my job and we moved away from Lexington. William Greene has a B.S. degree from I.W.U. and has made a career of working with the public.
